Velma Imogene Lawrence

Imogene Lawrence of Wynnewood, OK was born on October 1, 1917 near Elmore City, OK to Joel and Ada Sweat and passed away Saturday July 30, 2016 in Norman, OK at the age of 98 years 9 months and 30 days. Imogene grew up and attended school in Elmore City. She sang for the "Four Notes" (ladies quartet) and they worked for the Stamps Baxter Music Company for six years. She taught private piano lessons in her home and surrounding schools for eight years. Imogene worked for Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City, OK for three years, also substituted in area schools for years. She and Odie Elmer Lawrence were married November 19, 1945 in Dallas, Texas and both attended East Central College in Ada, OK. Odie was called back into the Armed Services and they lived in Stockton, CA; Great Falls, MT; Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; Ardmore, OK; Tokyo, Japan; Cocoa Beach, FL; Santa Clara, CA; and retired southwest of Wynnewood, OK in 1964. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Wynnewood and other states where she had lived. She, also, was a member of the "Special Ladies Group". The things she loved the most, besides her family and their care, was operating the sound system at Church, recording the service, making copies and taking them to the shut - ins in their home and the nursing home, and reading her Bible every morning. She loved growing flowers and watching the birds at their feeder and the Blue Birds nesting near the kitchen window. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1982, two sons - Lowell Lawrence in 2000 and Lyndal Lawrence in 2012, three sisters - Essie Hobgood, Ruby Williams and husband Laurencie, Bessie McGalliard and husband Alva (Mac) and their son Nick McGalliard, on brother - Clyde Sweat and a brother in law M.E. Lawrence. She is survived by two sons - Larry Lawrence of Albuquerque, NM and Louis Lawrence of the home in Wynnewood, OK; several nieces and nephews and their families and a number of cousins and their families. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 3, 2016 at the Church of Christ in Wynnewood, OK officiated by Todd McRay. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood.
