Marie Powell Woods

Marie Powell Woods, a resident of Okla. City was born June 5, 1921 in Sherman, Texas to James Knox & Maude (Frier) Powell. She passed away Thursday September 8, 2016 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 95 years 3 months and 3 days. She was married to Horace "Woody" Woods at Guthrie, OK on June 12, 1941. He preceded her in death in August 31, 2007. Marie grew up in Sulphur, graduated from Sulphur High School. She attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha for 2 years before transferring to Oklahoma University for one year where she played on the womens golf team. She left during WWII when the military recruited her to be a typist. She was raised in the Methodist Church starting in the church her grandfather helped to build. She was a member of the Sulphur United Methodist Church where she was active in choir, Sunday School and Bible Studies. Her lifelong interest was in music, dance, and art. She played the piano, violin and saxophone. She won numerous awards for music, dancing and speech, was an artist that loved to paint. Her children still have and cherish all her paintings. Her first love was family and her relationship with Jesus Christ. After marrying and living in Oklahoma City she began volunteer work, which was special to her. She was a member of the Okla. City Jaycee Janes, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Okla. City Public School PTA. She became ill in April 2016, and is coming home to Sulphur, OK (her favorite place) where she had many interests and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Son: James Franklin Woods, Grandson: J. Woods, brother: George Powell. Survived by: Daughter & son-in-law: Betsy Woods Beck & Robert of Edmond, OK Son & daughter-in-law: Robert Charles Woods & Dawn of Springfield, MO; Daughter-in-law: Victoria Woods, 4 Grandchildren: James Franklin Woods, Jr & Barbara Pamela Sue Denton & Troy, Jennifer Marie Beck, and Christina Rae Beck 5 Great Grandchildren: Noah Denton, Silas Denton, Issac Denton, Erin Woods and Elizabeth Woods, Services will be held Saturday September 10, 2016 at 11:00AM Graveside at Oaklawn Cemetery officiated by Rev. David George. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of DeArman Funeral Home Sulphur, OK In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Sulphur United Methodist Church.
