A. B. Elrod

Funeral Services for Mr. A. B. Elrod, 98, of Tishomingo, Oklahoma will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 10:00 a. m. at the Tishomingo High School Gymnasium with Pastor Jonathan Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Condon Grove Cemetery in Milburn, Oklahoma with Military Honors provided by The Chickasaw Nation Honor Guard. Mr. Elrod passed away on August 3, 2017 at the Mercy Hospital in Tishomingo. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. A. B. Elrod was born on November 5, 1918 in Hominy, Oklahoma to Lose B. Elrod and Stella Louiza (Williams) Elrod. He graduated from high school in Hominy and later received an Associates Degree from Murray State College in Tishomingo. He joined the United States Army in 1940, serving in the 5th Cavalry during WWII, where he received a Purple Heart, and many other service related honors. He was Honorably Discharged in 1944. During his military career, he met and married Lena F. Spray on November 9, 1942. She preceded him in death on December 31, 2000. Mr. Elrod was a farmer and rancher all of his life. He loved anything connected with soil and watching things grow. He was very patriotic and loved his country and community. He was a charter member of the Johnston County Farm Bureau Board, the V. F. W., the American Legion, and the A. S. C. S. Board. He was also a strong supporter of the local 4-H and FFA organizations. Mr. Elrod was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bobby; a daughter, Nancy Wood; his brother, Ray; and two sisters, Thelma Spar and Lucille Lee. He is survived by his daughter, Louise Vestal of Tishomingo; his son, Joe Elrod and wife Paula of Tishomingo; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; his only living cousin, Pat Cockran of Oklahoma City; other relatives and a host of friends. Casket Bearers for the service will be: Wade Wood, Bryer Wood, Birch Wood, Brady Wood, Caleb Skouby, Eli Vandevier, Justin Wilkinson, Audie Bob Ratchford, Rickey Ratchford, Chance Ratchford, Dustin Ratchford, Cole Ratchford, Benny Lewis and Clarence Lewis. Honorary Bearers will be: Tom Vestal, Ricky Sikes, Dane Brecheen, Randall Adams, Sam Cecil, Joe Heath and Butch Sliger. Memorial Donations may be made to the Johnston County Veteran’s Center, PO Box 71, Tishomingo, OK 73460.
